The Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the secret prisons - World travellers to the Rialto Bridge
Part One
Cultural visit to the Doge's Palace and access to the ancient Prisons via the Bridge of Sighs
You will enter the Porta del Frumento (Corn Door) on a tour that will take you inside the Doge's Palace, a masterpiece of Gothic art in Venice. The Palace was the symbol, and the centre, of the political and administrative life of the "Repubblica Serenissima" and its power over the seas and the many people of the Mediterranean. Sumptuous governmental rooms, private rooms for the Doge's pleasure, impressive rooms for public justice, rooms for causing fear and imprisoning enemies of the city. The Doge's Palace symbolises all of this, as over the years it has represented the power and prestige of a great nation that became the "Queen of the Sea".
Part Two
Streets of life and history: the centre of the world between St Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge
The walk takes us outdoors to cross the historic heart of Venice, in an area that lies between St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge. Here the protagonist is the life and noise of the famous streets, mingling with the swarming day to day traffic and the memories and continuity of trade, the fondaci (storehouses) and the markets of ancient Venice.
